Three dimensional representation of mapping data enables a clearer understanding
of spatial relationships. For presentation or for analysis, 3D models
convey much more information than traditional 2D maps and diagrams. X3D
provides a feature rich environment for building such models and displaying
them on the internet. This can be used to give web access to a GIS database.
Since X3D is an interactive format, the 3D environment can be queried. For example,
a house could be touched to bring up property tax information or construction
history.
2D Map
A two dimensional map and its data can be used as a basis for building an interactive
3D environment using X3D. Pinecoast can build 3D models based on your GIS data.

3D Visualization
The 3D version of the map is generated from the two dimensional data.
An animated tour of the region is also added to show lines of sight
or to show directions if used as a map. Municipal data such as tax assessments,
and utility information can also be overlaid onto the scene.
Maintenance information such as road repair condition can also be added.
Zoning information and survey data are other possible uses.
Infrastructure
The 3D model is also useful for displaying below-ground information. The
location of water, gas and cable lines can be shown in the model. Text
information related to the pipes can also be included.
Models can also be made of other below-ground structures such as mines, wells,
and mineral and oil deposits.
