An X3D virtual environment presents an excellent opportunity to recreate
ancient buildings and artifacts. It provides the ability through the internet
to visit sites that are too distant or may no longer exist. It also allows
for experiments involving the reconstruction of objects from fragments.
The Temple
This example of an Egyptian temple is not modeled after any particular temple.
Its facade is roughly inspired by the temple of Horus at Edfu.
Archaeology
The interactive 3D environment of an X3D file allows for the creation of models
of ancient sites such as this Egyptian temple. This model can be used to test theories
on how such sites looked when they were originally built. Construction processes
can also be illustrated.
Virtual museum
In addition to large buildings, all types of small archaeological artifacts can
be modelled in X3D. It is possible in this way to construct an entire online museum.
Visitors from all over the world can visit. X3D can also be used to preserve artifacts
that are in danger of decay, or to display artifacts for which there is not enough
display space.
A virtual exhibit also allows the creation of interactive displays that would not
be possible with the real artifacts.
